Hollywood is Full of Crap

Hey, I love movies and TV just as much as the next guy but the Hollywood industry bugs me. On an individual basis a lot of people in Hollywood do a lot of good things and represent a lot of positive ideals. But as a whole the industry is full of it.

The most recent example was the Oscar Awards for 2009. I have not watched this boring program in probably a dozen years but I like to see who and what was considered the best of the year. The director of the year went to Kathryn Bigelow for making the renowned movie, "The Hurt Locker." Good for her. Though I have not seen this film it is supposed to be well done. But I was surprised to hear that Bigelow was the first woman in more than 70 years of Oscar history to win this award.

So, let me get this straight. In 70 years a woman has not done a good enough job directing a movie to win this award? So either directing is not something women excel in or women have deliberately been left out of contention. I thought Hollywood was hip on the whole equal rights thing?

Another recent example was the whole Prop 8 incident in California. I remember seeing a number of high profile Hollywood personalities speaking out against Prop 8 when it passed and complaining how much money those in favor of Prop 8 were able to raise. Well, where is the Hollywood money if they were so against Prop 8? They have some of the biggest salaries out there and should have had plenty of disposable cash. I'm sure as individuals there were plenty of men and women that put their wallet where their mouths were but as a whole I think Hollywood is full of it.

But for some crazy reason we continue to worship these people and their work! For crying out loud I just finished Robert Wagner's autobiography and though he seems like a nice guy he is hardly a good example. So, why do we keep supporting a messed up self-serving industry? Wasn't excessive entertainment a key reason the Roman Empire collapsed? Could that happen to us?

Jason, as himself said...

Well, many of them are vegetarians and vegans, so that's a good thing, right?
