After a few hours of contractions Heidi was at a 4 and the pain was becoming too much to bear and even though she wanted to go natural she relented to some pain meds which made her sick so she opted for the epidural. Since I am a man and have no way to comprehend this type of pain I’ll have to believe her when she said it was bad.
The nurse told me too many fathers have a hard time watching the epidural so they ask all fathers to leave the room. That is stupid, I have seen far worse than an epidural and thanks to my Army Medic experience I have stuck lost of needles into men and women. Grudgingly, I left the room and after hearing what transpired after I left I regret succumbing to their lame request.
You see, Heidi had an immediate reaction to the epidural and almost instantly went paralyzed from her neck down. In the meantime baby’s pulse tanked and half a dozen people rushed into the room. Heidi was terrified as she heard them say prepare the operating room for an emergency c-section. Meanwhile I’m sitting in the waiting room reading the newspaper like some sort of oblivious jerk-off as my wife and baby were in serious trouble. Great rule, why would you want a husband around as his family is in danger?
After a few minutes they both recovered and Heidi had a partial epidural but no pump because of her reaction. So, for the rest of the delivery Heidi had to do with a bad reaction to meds and the epidural. By the time the delivery was done the meds had both worn off but Heidi was a champ and did not complain of any pain, just a lot of intense pressure.
EDITORS NOTE: What actually happened was that the spinal needle used for the epidural actually went into the spinal canal instead of on top of the spinal canal. When the doctor tested it by injecting a small bolus of the drug, Heidi was immediately paralyzed and the baby's heart rate drop dramatically. This later caused a spinal fluid leak which landed Heidi bed ridden for a week. A second epidural was offered, but Heidi refused. Thus by the time of delivery all pain meds had worn off.
Giving birth is hands down the most disgusting thing I have ever witnessed and I have seen some pretty freaky stuff including Ben’s mangled body after falling two stories, a man’s finger pinched off by the breach of a cannon, and personally pulling some poor Dominican’s tooth out of his mouth with a pair of dental pliers among other fun events.
But boy, the sights, smells, and colors involved in delivery is disturbing if not horrifying and to be honest I don’t understand how any man has any sort of sexual appetite for some time. However, I will admit, it is unbelievable…nope, it is pretty incredibly amazing that out of all that yelling, goop, blood, and odor comes a real life baby.
Granted Heidi did not totally, 100% succeed in having an all-natural birth she did achieve something even better: I am proud to announce that Heidi did NOT soil herself during the delivery of our new baby boy.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!!!
Way to go Heidi, I think I would have freaked out and started crying unconrolably.
He is very handsome! Is that curly hair I see? It didn't look red, but I couldn't really tell.
Coming from experience, you have to celebrate his birthday every year even if you are tired of the holidays. Hope your recovery goes well.

How exciting. I am so happy for you guys. He is so sweet. Congratulations. Boys are pretty special.
CONGRATS!! I am so happy for the both of you. Heidi when you responded to one of my posts several months ago re baby formula with a very knowledgeable response (like you had done your homework on the subject) I knew something was up! Aren't the Lord's "tender mercies" just beautiful, wonderful, miraculous!! I am so happy for the both of you. Welcome to the world of blogging about your kids!! Can't wait to see this cutie in action! I think he looks so much like his mommy!!
Congrats. He looks like a boy...that is good. I am glad everything turned out fine; that is what matters right? Get some rest...it's the last chance you'll get for a very long time, so I hear.
That's weird. Daniel has a kid.
It will be fun to have another nephew in the family.
YAY! Congratulations to you all. He is really cute, and Henry is a great name. I can just see this cute little kid toddling around getting into things: "Henryyyyy, stay out of the cupboard. Henryyy, no, no."
I am so happy for you and your miracle baby. Or what seems like a miracle baby.
And Daniel, your descriptions of the whole birth process are brutally honest. Brutally. It made me laugh out loud. I wonder if Heidi will make you edit them when she feels well enough!
Anyway, I can't say enough about this!
Happy birthday to Henry.
I CANNOT wait to hear Heidi's version of this.
Congratulations!!!!!!

Oh My GOSH!! He is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE!! Seriously PERFECT!! Most babies come out looking all weird and alien-like. But not him. Congrats you guys!! I'm totally shocked! I thought it would be a girl! We couldn't be happier for you!!!!!!!

Congratulations Guys! He is such a cute little boy! Enjoy, before you know he will be in Kindergarten!!
Dan,
We have all said stupid things trying to be funny, but letting us know that you are proud that your wife did not soil herself during childbirth, are you kidding me? You know that your words can be used in divorce court don’t you? Maybe you need to focus the attention where it belongs- on Heidi and your newborn son.
Sorry, to be so blunt- I have been the king of saying stupid things myself. I still love you even if I’m not your favorite person right now.
Awesome baby!
Uncle Dale!
Hey Guys! Congrats! I only just found out recently. What a story! I had Justin go get himself a lunch while I had my epidural...i doubt that is the real reason that the husbands are sent out during the epidural injection...but you're right atleast you had something a million and one times better as an outcome of it all! Gorgeous son!
Congrats to the Sheltons!! Henry is so darn cute. He looks just like his mom. My best to you all and you start the funnest adventure of your life!!
Dan and Heidi,
